What is Functional Neurology?
Simply put, in functional neurology, we assess the nervous system, especially the brain. When we perform an evaluation, we are looking for any underlying conditions, weaknesses, or improper function in the brain and/or body, and any disconnection and/or imbalance between the networks of the brain. We do this by examining retained primitive reflexes, posture, balance and coordination, gait, muscular development, eye-tracking, cognitive skills, and motor timing and planning. Our goal is to identify specific weak or underdeveloped networks in the brain, activate them with multi-dimensional stimulation, and improve their integration with other brain networks.
What to expect
Once you set up your first appointment, we will send you a couple of intake forms to be completed before your initial evaluation. These forms provide not only the child’s history, but also a big picture of strategies to pursue. At the assessment, we will test each part of the brain region in order to identify which network of the brain has neurological weakness and is underdeveloped. Afterwards, we will review our findings with you and make a customized plan for your child, along with a home care plan. We will re-evaluate during the course of treatment to ensure we are going in the right direction.
Who can we help
Our program is designed for children who struggle with attention/focus issues, balance and coordination issues, motor and sensory deficits, behavioral difficulties, academic difficulties, poor performance in sports, eye-tracking issues, cognitive delays, severe anxiety, emotional dysregulation, autonomic dysregulation, learning delays and much more. This includes children who have already been diagnosed with ADD/ADHD, Dyslexia, Depression, Autism spectrum, Sensory processing disorder, OCD, Tics, Tourette, etc.
How we help
In order to achieve optimal improvement, we utilize multi-dimensional strategies and tools, such as primitive reflexes integration, core stability, motor sensory integration, vestibular and oculomotor integration, and more. We also co-activate the brain with innovative tools such as lower level laser (photobiomodulation), Neurosage (digital medicine), exercise with oxygen, vagal stimulation, vibration with specific frequency, etc.
Another aspect of what we do is incorporate functional medicine to examine the metabolic status of the brain and body. In order for the brain and body to develop properly, they require sufficient nutrients. We must rule out any underlying mechanisms such as food sensitivity, blood glucose dysregulation, anemia, nutritional deficiency, methylation defects, metal toxicity, environmental toxins, autoimmunity, etc. Functional medicine testing, including the ones below, can look for some of those causes.
